Following a limited competition; Peak Architects were appointed to convert a redundant Grade I listed cart shed and associated barns to provide an outdoor education centre for the Devonshire Educational Trust.
The fabric of the Cartshed was in a state of disrepair and its massing and siting had been visually impaired by the addition of later agricultural buildings. Central to our approach was to remove these later, poor quality, buildings and then undertake extensive repairs and enhancement to the existing building to stabilize and reinstate them to their former glory.
We agreed with Historic England that new elements should be contemporary in form, with careful consideration given to the design and detailing of these new insertions to allow them to sit respectively in the historic fabric. The contrast between the modern elements and traditional building form provided a series of dynamic flexible spaces.
