Extension to a café within the Peak Village Shopping Centre, to replace a dated conservatory with a contemporary dining space and new entrance. Following a masterplan for the development of the shopping centre, Peak Architects were approached to develop the technical design of the extension and assist with the delivery of the project on site.
The existing café conservatory was cold, draughty and didn't fit with the character or quality of the estate. The new extension provides a light filled dining space, with floor to ceiling steel doors and windows, along with two large rooflights. The simple material palette of oak, stone and steel reference traditional agricultural buildings in the area, with contemporary detailing and structural design allowing for an open, flexible space. Much of the oak used to clad the building has been sourced from local storm fallen trees across the Chatsworth Estate, and the stone is from a local quarry.
The thermal performance of the café has been significantly improved, with insulated walls, floors and roof, high performance glazing and underfloor heating. The canopy provides shelter during the winter months as well as providing shading for the sun during the summer to prevent overheating. These improvements, combined with the local and sustainable material sourcing reduce both the embodied and operational carbon of the building.
