Peak Architects were approached by the clients, who had recently bought the property, and wanted to add to the legacy of their 18th Century stone building.

Experts in Peak District Park planning

With plans for a new two-storey replacement extension having lapsed, Peak were initially tasked with reconfiguring the layout to better suit the client’s needs without materially altering the external appearance of the lapsed application, making for a smoother planning process.

The amended layout provides an open plan kitchen, dining room, and lounge at ground floor, with a feature glazed corner door providing a seamless but clearly defined threshold from the existing house into the new extension. At first floor, the introduction of a mezzanine floor provides an incredible office space with natural light and a glass balustrade overlooking the dining area below. A series of glazed doors provided views over the beautiful, tiered garden and down to the river, as well as immediate access out onto the stone terrace.

Incorporating original historic features

It was also important to retain the existing stone entrance portico as this was an original feature of the hall in its original position. The existing extension under-utilised this feature, with the front door elsewhere. Comparatively, the new extension layout was configured to maximise its use - providing the new, suitably impressive, main entrance.

Upon planning approval, Peak Architects undertook technical design, then oversaw the project to completion on site, creating an incredible mixed-use family space.
